CRM Extends Playoff Points Cushion

The Speed 51 Elite Old Testament Firearms Truck Series took to Phoenix Raceway Sunday night in the 6th of 8 regular season races. Country Roads Motorsports entered the night 40 points to the good with three races remaining before the playoffs. It’s a comfortable margin, but not an insurmountable one.

Hank Steinmiller put the Voice of Motown Silverado toward the front of the field in qualifying with a p3 effort. Stage points and a decent finish would be the name of the game. After a flurry of early cautions, CRM found themselves 2nd in Stage 1 and 5th in Stage 2. The stage bonuses would amount to 15 extra points.

A caution flew on lap 45 that jumbled the pit strategy for the stage break due to the restart happening on lap 51. The back half of the field was able to pit, while the front half was unable to pit due to the late decision on the stage process. Running p5 at the time, this meant we did not end up getting fresh rubber for the final run.

Once the field got spaced out for the final run, Steinmiller was able to keep position in the top 6. A couple of trucks on fresh tires were able to move forward, while CRM seemed content for a 6th place finish. The 5th-7th place trucks were running right on top of each other as calamity broke out going into turn 3. Three trucks entering the corner on different lines was a recipe for disaster. Steinmiller went in on the bottom but ran out of room and created a 2 car incident bringing out a caution and causing aero damage to the truck.

Another caution in turn 1 on the next restart killed any time CRM had left to get back lost positions. On the final restart, we were able to move from 18th to 12th to gain some of the lost points back. A great run, gone bad, turned decent for the Country Roads Motorsports team. In the end, we were able to extend our points cushion to +55 with races at Texas and Gateway left before the playoffs.
